Hey everyone! Mark your calendars because Free Comic Book Day is right around the corner!
FCBD is an annual comic book event intended to help bring new readers into independent comic book stores and introduce them to the wonderful world of comics.
It started in 2002, and is coordinated by the industry's single largest distributor of comic books, Diamond Comic Distributors.
FCBD always takes place on the first Saturday of May (this year on May 7, 2016), and will be celebrating its 15th anniversary this year!
Free Comic Book Day has 3 main purposes:
1. To introduce everyone to the joys of reading comics.
2. To call back former comic book readers.
3. To thank current comic book buyers for their continued support.
Publishers produce special edition comics geared to attracting new non-comic readers. There is a wide diversity of comics available, from traditional comics fare like Archie and Disney, superhero comics from Marvel and DC, manga from Tokyopop, as well as work from independent publishers.
Many comic book shops bring in writers and artists in the world of comics to do appearances and sign comics as a way to draw more people in. It's a great event that everyone should check out.
